Plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia

This map goes back to the beginning for Washington DC.

The map notes that the land for the new planned capital city was ceded by the neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia.

Today, DC's boundaries extend beyond the original plan, but the city's characteristic diagonal streets and circles are still in place. The shape of the tidal basin and other coastal areas has also changed over the years with dredging and land reclamation.
